Right; Shen Yuan forgot that Magnus--and presumably also Galahad--doesn't know how courtesy names work. He picks up on that thread because he's already dismissed the other one as nonsense. Even if it's true, he still wants to look good. Maybe that's vain? Whatever.

"Most of the cultivators here have two names," he says. So just 'Binghe' is about as familiar as you can get, with him."
